I had to break that thing loose and didn't pay attention to where the bolt was when i took it out. So i was reinstalling the drain bolt and the thing just kept spinning easy. WebMar 5, 2012 · I would drain the transfer case with the front end of the vehicle lifted in the air, so as to get all the oil out, then lower the vehicle, hoping no lingering oil inside will keep contacting the crack. Clean around the crack very thoroughly using strong solvent containing no oily substances. Acetone is good. 1. On the passenger side, use a 12mm socket to remove the bolt that secures the speedo gear bracket to the transfer case. Install the speedo gear bracket and replace the bolt. Torque to 21 ft-lbs.

Somebody probably over-torqued the drain plug there, and over time it produced that stress crack. If it's time to drain the oil in the case do that, and wrap the plugs with yellow teflon tape.
