Susanna bore some nineteen children in a period of nineteen years. Nine of those children died as infants—including two sets of twins. One baby was smothered by a maid. She was the youngest of twenty-five children, and her father, Dr. Samuel Annesley, was a minister and a dissenter from the Church of England. She was mature, smart, and ambitious.
